It may seem difficult at first to get a scholarship, but there are many avenues and types available to those seeking. Scholarships are available by academic achievements, the state you live in, sports, community services you provided, disabilities, and even heritage. The more scholarship applications you fill out and send in, the more opportunities you will have to be chosen. You will want to seek out scholarships that are relevant to you and your accomplishments. It is not uncommon to spend time applying for very many scholarships, as this will increase your chances for being chosen to receive the scholarship. Most Financial Aid counselors are happy to help advise you where to begin your search, and can even tell you which scholarships will be worth looking into and applying for- making it a more personal experience. On the other hand, if you are looking online, a great place to start your search is at www.scholarships.com or www.collegeboard.com.
When you find scholarships that either match your profile or interest you, it's important to apply early. This will give you much more chance of being awarded the scholarship by not missing the deadline. Some people even keep calendars or appointment books with deadlines, appointments, or phone calls that need to be kept for follow up with the scholarships. Be sure to verify that you meet all of the eligibility requirements. If an essay is required to apply, be sure to follow the guidelines and stay within the word count limits, re-reading and spell-checking after you finish writing. Sometimes it can be even helpful to have someone you know read over your essay. It is also important your application is legible and often helps to either print it out or type it out. You should be as thorough as possible when filling papers out and not leave any areas of the application empty; if there happens to be something you don't understand, contact those affiliated with your scholarship. Keeping copies of any communications and papers sent in will be helpful in the event you need to re-send anything, or look back at anything for your own reference.
